Actor Tamer (Dompteur)

Actor Tamer (Dompteur)

English

An original, evolutionary show, DOMPTEUR is a spontaneous-generation structure featuring four different actors each performance, as well as a musician and a dompteur, or tamer – the director. Throughout the performance, the Dompteur will impose an initial situation, either aloud or discreetly, all while directing the musician and lighting technician to create the proper ambiance. Together, they’ll collaborate to build stories and sequences of events. This spontaneous-generation structure allows the actors to play unrestrained by stageplay in order to best explore the possibilities of the game and fully embody the depth of the characters they’ll invent on the spot. In this way, DOMPTEUR allows audiences to be fully immersed in the world of theatre and gives them the precious feeling of having had the chance, if just for a moment, to access the imagination of the creators.

Anglais To De Max

Anglais To De Max

Alex grew up in the West Island of Montreal. Francois had a childhood in Aylmer Quebec. We both speak French, English and Spanish. Tim Horton was definitely a corner stone of our lives. Be ready for a whirlwind of emotions! MEMBERS: Alexander Gauthier Francois Messier

Bilingual Jam

N'importe qui can sign up to play in our Bilingual Jam. Our hosts, Grinders, will pull names out of a hat. Et peu importe leur langue, a brand new duo is born to play pour 3 minutes!

Blood & Thunder

Blood & Thunder

English

Blood & Thunder have been together forever. They are from Montreal and have performed in Toronto, Vermont, Austin, Ottawa, Vancouver and at a burrito restaurant. They are fun to watch, charismatic on stage and their moms are very proud of them.

Cherry Bomb

Cherry Bomb

English

Cherry Bomb is four friends who inspire each other to be weird and free, and explore moments in time. Dominique Blain, Inga Knoth, Ariel de Roo & Mariana Vial

Coffee Break

Coffee Break

English

Are you a fan of cut-aways, time-dashes, flashbacks, flash forwards and lateral-right-and-lefts? Do you like character exploration? Do you enjoy high energy nonsense? Last question... you appreciate a good laugh? Well then, this is your lucky day! COFFEE BREAK combines all these as they perform the classic improv format, PRETTY FLOWER, where a central mono-scene inspires a series related tap outs, group scenes and tangential character and theme explorations that return right to where the players left off in the middle. Exciting to follow, fun to watch. Downright mandatory for improv fans.

Colour Outside the Lines

Colour Outside the Lines

English

Colour Outside the Lines is a diverse ensemble, who perform improv based on stories of family, moving, and blending traditions. They are dedicated to uplifting narratives that highlight marginalized experiences, and have had two sold out shows, including their recent Ladyfest edition, which was featured in the Montreal Gazette and Cult Montreal.

Dough Girls

Dough Girls

English

Dough Girls are a tiny but mighty duo. Members Carolyn Howard and Carmen Rose met and began performing together over a year ago. When they are not on stage together, you can find them sitting quietly, alone, in their respective homes, day dreaming about what breed of dog they like best. Is it a bishon frise? Or a neapolitan mastiff? Ask them after the show and they might just tell you. They are excited to be a part of MPROV this year and look forward to seeing you at the show!

Easy Action

Easy Action

English

EASY ACTION is a two-man improvised tale created in the moment by Brent Skagford and Marc Rowland.

Goddamn Bear

Goddamn Bear

English

GODDAMN BEAR use solo scenes as a leaping-off point into a series of rich character vignettes that, while truthful and grounded, are as weird as you want them to be. They appeared at the 2017 Del Close Marathon on the UCB Chelsea stage and the Vancouver International Improv Fest in October. GODDAMN BEAR's members work together outside of the Bear as well, most notably with the monthly PARTY DINOSAUR SKETCH SHOW, improv teams The HIBBERSON TWINS, FRANK MYTHIC and the award-winning narrative improv show PRECINCT: AN IMPROVISED COP COMEDY which has played in Toronto and Montreal.

Grinders

Grinders

English

The Theatre Sainte-Catherine regulars, Sunday Night Improv veterans, this is an improv show that changes your perception of what humans are capable of dreaming. MEMBERS: Sandi Armstrong Alain Mercieca Charlie Dibbles

Français

À partir de mots proposés par le public, les cinq comédiens proposent des débuts d'histoire. Les spectateurs dont les mots ont été choisi peuvent alors décider de l'improvisation qui sera joué. Jess and Vance

English

Jess and Vance are pals and Montreal locals who have been doing improv together for five years now. Over the years they've brought their sweet, silly and loose performance style to the Big City Improv Festival, East Coast Improv Festival and Montreal Fringe Festival. This is their fourth appearance at Mprov and holy crap, bro, they're so stoked.

Juliet & Juliet

Juliet & Juliet

English

Improv duo Juliet & Juliet perform never-before-seen plays in the style of William Shakespeare, typically with a feminist twist. Beginning with a title chosen by the audience, Sami Haeli and Meghan Wolff create completely improvised tragedies, comedies, and even the occasional history play. Meghan and Sami are drawn together by a mutual love of language and classic literature.

Kingdom Kids

Kingdom Kids

English

The Kingdom Kids (Natalie Miller, John Mathias, Nathan Hartswick, Brian De La Bruere) were formed 70 years ago in the forests of Vermont, when Senator George Aiken bestowed upon a handful of rural counties the aspirational moniker of ""The Northeast Kingdom."" These nymph-improvisers (or “nymphrovisors"") hibernated underground for several generations before emerging in the 1980s and 90s as adolescent comedians, forming an appreciation for nature, learning the importance of self-reliance and hard work, and being bullied by dumb jocks in such towns as Lyndonville, Sheffield and Newport.

The Kiki (an All-Lady Jam)

The Kiki (an All-Lady Jam)

English

This is one juicy bit of gossip you can be sure is the truth - The Kiki is back at Mprov! A celebration of hilarious female improvisers, the Kiki brings together a diverse all-female group of players from Montreal and beyond to perform not one but two montage sets based on suggestions from the audience. Don't miss it!

Learn Real Good (Int'l Edition)

Learn Real Good (Int'l Edition)

English

LEARN REAL GOOD is the genetic splicing of a TED talk with an improv show. We have invited two honest-to-goodness experts to give talks about their field of expertise. After each presentation, a group of improvisers will perform a set of scenes riffing on the ideas presented. LEARN REAL GOOD makes learning about our world a great night out! Performing in this set: Vinny Francois (Montreal), Sami Haeli (Minneapolis, USA), DJ Mausner (Toronto), Christian Smith (Toronto), Kevin Vidal (Toronto), & Meghan Wolff (Minneapolis, USA)

Les lundis

Les lundis

Français

We will then develop these meanings into a series of interconnected scenes designed to make you laugh, cry, and maybe even question the fabric of space and time!

Merlin Monroe

Merlin Monroe

Bilingue English & Français

Merlin Monroe is Montreal Improv's bilingual house team, a glorious experiment where neither the francos nor the anglos have mastered the other language, but damnit they're doing their meilleur, là. To bridge their language barriers and potholes, they bring emotion, physicality, relationships and bein bein du coeur. It's delightfully linguistically awkward; it is pure Montreal. She's Dead, Now What?

She's Dead, Now What?

English

The Matriarch is dead. A large and disparate family come together from all over the world. Finally having to face each other as they go through the stages of grieving. We all have at least one family member who is a loose cannon. Maybe their politics are opposite to yours or perhaps they have a evil side that outside people rarely see. She’s Dead, now what? Is both touching and hilarious, as people scramble to stay sane, as a lifetime of issues are thrown in each others faces! An ensemble brought to you by Sarah Kinsella from Impro Melbourne in Australia

English

Soul Decision is made up of Kevin Vidal (Second City Mainstage Toronto) and Christian Smith (Second City TourCo UndStdy.) and they'll bring their energetic, grounded style to the stage in longform based improv. They want to make you laugh and occasionally tug at your heartstrings. They've performed in JFL42, Big City Improv Festival, the Black and Funny Improv festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota and have toured parts of Canada. Both are actors and writers but most of all they're nice boys.

We're So Strong

English

Intro to Improvised Shakespeare with Sami Haeli & Meghan Wolff (Minneapolis, USA)

Sat, Nov 11th, 11:30am • 2.5h • 40$

Not sure how you feel about this “Shakespeare” guy? In love with his work but never had the chance to get up on stage and make his words your own? This is the workshop for you, no experience performing improv or Shakespeare necessary! This workshop will cover all the basics you need to improvise the Bard’s work as though you’ve stepped right out of the 16th century and into an improv scene. We’ll get familiar with Shakespeare’s work, then explore and play with some of the basic building blocks, including wild metaphors, bold monologues, and passionate characters.

This workshop isn’t just for those interested in improvising Shakespeare. It’s also for anyone who wants to explore how presentation and delivery can change an audience’s experience of your show, for anyone interested in using improv to explore another art they love, or for anyone looking to shake up their improv with a new approach to scenework.

Teacher Bios:
Sami and Meghan met in Manners & Misconduct: Improvised Jane Austen, where their mutual love of verbal sparring and oddball speeches inspired them to start Juliet & Juliet. Sami has a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, where she founded the student improv team "Backwards Thinkers Society". Since graduating in '13, she's been doing professional and amateur theatre and improv in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Sami loves potatoes, Harry Potter, and dead British writers. Meghan is the director of multi-season sold-out shows Manners & Misconduct: Improvised Jane Austen and The Life Impromptu: Improvised Wes Anderson. She's also a member of Second Wave Feminist Nightmare Enclave and CSz Twin Cities. She specializes in developing structures and exercises that suit genre narrative and is currently pursuing an MFA in writing.

Tick ... Tick ... BOOM! with Jackie Twomey & Devon Henderson (Toronto, ON)

Sat, Nov 11th, 3:00pm • 2.5h • 40$

A good longform set is funny, but a *great* set also builds a rich and detailed world. We can achieve this by slowing down and taking in everything that happens on stage. TwoSon's workshop will focus on how starting small can take you somewhere big and silly. Participants will learn how to connect, heighten, and explore patient scene work. This workshop emphasizes discovery over invention, so if you sometimes struggle to "find the funny," or are bogged down with too many ideas, this is the workshop for you.
